Who medical technology users are

Medical technology users are children or young people who rely on medical devices to support their health, breathing, feeding, or mobility.
This can include both temporary and long-term use of equipment.

These pupils may have complex health needs that require trained staff, care plans and close coordination between families, schools, and healthcare teams.

    • Tracheostomies or breathing supports (e.g. CPAP, ventilators)

    • Catheters or stoma care

    • Insulin pumps and glucose monitors

    Support needs and considerations

Support for medical technology users must ensure:

    • trained staff are available to operate or monitor devices

    • safe storage and hygiene procedures

    • clear emergency and maintenance plans

    • emotional support for the pupil and family

    • dignity and inclusion in all school activities

These students are often supported by multidisciplinary teams, including nurses, physiotherapists, and SEN staff.

Managing health and safety in education

Every pupil using medical technology should have:

    • an Individual Healthcare Plan (IHP) detailing procedures, staff roles and emergency steps

    • access to trained staff familiar with their equipment

    • flexibility in attendance and routine for medical needs

    • involvement of NHS community nurses or private care providers

Where needs are complex, an EHCP can coordinate medical and educational support.

    Staff training and care planning

    Schools and providers should:

    • ensure regular, documented staff training

    • review care plans with parents and healthcare teams

    • plan safe participation in trips, sports and daily routines

    • keep backup supplies and emergency contacts available
