Local Providers for Childcare

What childcare providers do

Childcare providers support young children with daily care, early learning and social development. They create safe, nurturing environments where children can play, explore and build early communication, physical and emotional skills.

Childcare can be delivered in nurseries, home settings, community venues or specialist early years environments.

Providers follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework and must meet safeguarding, welfare and learning standards.

Childcare settings often play a key role in identifying early developmental needs and supporting families seeking assessments or SEN support.

    Types of childcare

    Childcare includes:

    • Day nurseries – full-day early education and care for infants to preschoolers
    • Childminders – home-based regulated care with personalised routines
    • Nannies and home carers – in-home childcare arranged by families
    • Preschool and playgroup sessions – part-time structured early learning
    • Wraparound care – before- and after-school childcare and holiday clubs
    • Specialist SEN early years provision – for children needing regulated therapeutic or developmental support

Each type offers different levels of structure, flexibility and staffing ratios.

    Childcare and early education

Childcare settings provide early education in line with EYFS through:

    • play-based learning
    • language-rich interaction
    • early numeracy and literacy exposure
    • physical development activities
    • social interaction with peers
    • routines that support independence

Providers may also support early identification of needs such as speech delay, sensory processing difficulties or social communication differences.

They can make referrals to health visitors, speech and language therapy or local SEND services when concerns arise.

    Support for SEND

Childcare providers are expected to include and support children with special educational needs and disabilities.

    Support may include:

    • adapting activities and routines to the child’s needs
    • making sensory or environmental adjustments
    • providing 1:1 or small-group support
    • using visual timetables, communication systems or early intervention strategies
    • implementing advice from therapists or SEN specialists
    • applying for SEN Inclusion Funding (SENIF) or similar local support

For children with more complex needs, providers contribute to assessments and may support families pursuing an EHCP.

    Safeguarding and standards

    All childcare providers must meet:

    • enhanced DBS and safer-recruitment standards
    • EYFS safeguarding requirements
    • health and safety regulations
    • staff-to-child ratios
    • policies for behaviour, supervision and child protection
    • ongoing training in first aid, safeguarding and early years development

Regulated providers are inspected by Ofsted to ensure quality and safety.

Working with parents and local authorities

Childcare settings share updates with parents through:

    • daily communication
    • progress tracking
    • early years reports
    • information on wellbeing, routines and learning

    They work with:

    • health visitors
    • local SEND teams
    • early years inclusion specialists
    • therapists and social care (where relevant)

Providers may also offer funded places for 2-, 3- and 4-year-olds, depending on eligibility.
